US Healthcare Farce

Obama said - everybody should have access to affordable healthcare - and set in process the Affordable Care Act. This requires everybody to have health insurance. In order that those not so well off can get it, the act provides for funding to help those in need. Those that refuse to get healthcare get fined by the IRS to the tune of $500.

I can't get healthcare.

On the 18th of November 2013, I started a Healthcare.gov account. It has steadfastly refused to let me submit an application ever since.

At the beginning of March, 2014, I noticed the site claims that my identity has not been verified. A number was given on the website to call to get my identity verified. It turned out to be Experian (the credit rating agency). I spoke with them and they said "yes, you exist in our system but we cannot verify your identity because you've never taken out a loan". So because I'm smart, I can't get my identity verified. I rang the healthcare.gov number and was taken through the entire process of application by phone. Then I heard nothing - absolutely nothing.

On the 14th of March I had a nasty email from healthcare.gov
You may have received a notice stating that there was an application inconsistency when you tried to apply. An application inconsistency means the information you provided on your application doesn't match information we use to check what you are eligible for.Your notice also may have asked you to send in proof of certain information from your application, like your income. We want you to know that even if your eligibility determination notice asks you to provide additional information or documents to the Marketplace, you should still continue to choose and enroll in a health plan. The Marketplace will work with you to provide additional information or documents and resolve the inconsistency, but we don’t want paperwork to delay you from getting covered. If you've already resolved your application inconsistency, then you are another step closer to getting quality, affordable health coverage.Click here to return to your account and complete your enrollment online.Or, call 1-800-318-2596 and a trained customer service representative can help you enroll.  We’re committed to making sure you get the quality, affordable health coverage you need.Your last chance to enroll for 2014 coverage is March 31.The HealthCare.gov Team
I have given them all the information I can - in the spaces provided and given them honest, accurate information. It doesn't seem to matter.

On the 16th of March 2014 I rang again and was told that I was ineligible because my income was too low and that I had to fill in and send off a form requesting exemption from healthcare due to low income. I don't want to be exempt from having healthcare. I want healthcare. I want this affordable healthcare they talk about.

On the 16th of March 2014 I filled in an application to get Medicaid coverage and they could not verify my identity either.

On the 16th of March 2014 I filled in an application to get healthcare using the dc.gov website and they could not verify my identity either.

Strange how the IRS wants me to pay taxes since I don't seem to exist.

I can guarantee this - when they want to fine me next year for not buying health insurance - I'm damned well not paying that fine. I'll go to court over it and even jail if need be. I cannot get coverage if they refuse to give it!

  1. And let us not forget that some states are not going to use the plan. so some of us who can not afford it will be with out insurance or we will have to forget about paying rent and other bills to be able to have insurance to to the tune of almost $500.00 a month.. who can afford this? I say it is a racket, a scam.

  2. Nobody knows how many people like us are unable to obtain health coverage due to some system glitch or other or have been denied healthcare (like I have) until we are all in jail for not having healthcare and not paying the fine for not having it. They'll have to let all the murderers and rapists loose to make room for people that can't afford healthcare.

Snow falls in Lexington

This is probably the third time in 7 winters that I have known snow fall in South Carolina. It's the second decent snowfall I've seen though. The first was barely enough to be called a heavy frost. This, however, was enough that I could go out and take some really nice photos. Because things are so far apart in this part of the US and because the roads were quite slippery, I didn't venture too far. I went as far as the old mill and wandered around there for a while - until I began to get cold which was pretty much when I called it a day. The old mill in the snow The old sluicegatehouse in the snow The sluice mechanism For some unknown reason my camera had a hard time focussing here. I'm not happy with the result. This is, of course, my old Canon XT. It's usually pretty good with focus. This time I just don't know what it has done. The house where I rent a room This is the house that I rent a room in. Ocmulgee National Monument

This time it was a trip purely for myself. I could lie and say I stuck a pin in the map and decided randomly to go to Macon Georgia but it wasn't so. I had to see people in Macon quite early on Friday morning. Rachel came along for company. The trip up was quite peaceful and there was hardly any traffic. I passed some very interesting things beside the road though. I should have pulled over and taken a photo but I wanted to get to my hotel before dark. As it was, I arrived just as it was beginning to go dark. The journey wasn't entirely uneventful. I'd set my in-car GPS to navigate me to the center of Macon. I'd forgotten about that until I ended up in an area where all the shops had bars over the windows and heavy-set fellows with their knuckles dragging on the ground leered ominously out of the shadows. Then, realising my error, I started using my phone to navigate me to my ultimate destination. I'd used the in-car GPS because I wanted the phone free for calls e...

Lexington images

Together with my good friend Dorathy and armed solely with our trusty cameras, we went for a wander. Lexington, Columbia and Irmo are in a very much land-locked area, 120 miles inland with no sea or ocean to dip so much as a toe into. There is, however a beach. The local parks service decided to install a beach on the shore of Lake Murray. Now Lake Murray isn't really a lake in its own right. It is in fact a huge dam that was built in the 1930s to provide water and hydro-electric power to the emerging city of Columbia.  The dam comprises a huge wall about a mile long that snakes between what were originally two hills. The valley that became the dam used to be populated and apparently those that dive beneath the surface of the waters can find buildings and roads still in existence.  More recently there was a successful attempt to remove "The Lake Murray Bomber" which was a 2nd world war bomber that crashed into the water on a practice low-level bombing run over wa...
